Software Tools

We kindly ask the partecipants to have these SW installed on their PCs before the tutorial.

Geant4

Geant4 is a toolkit for the simulation of the passage of particles through matter. Its application areas include high energy, nuclear and accelerator physics, as well as studies in medical and space science.

To download and install it (v9.3.p01) we suggest to follow the instructions here:

Please download and build CLHEP before installing Geant4.

ROOT

ROOT is a framework for data processing, born at CERN, at the heart of the research on high-energy physics.  Every day, thousands of physicists use ROOT applications to analyze their data or to perform simulations.

A ROOT version (v 5.20) is already present in the public release of the Fermi Science Tools. It already contains everything that we need for this tutorial sessions. However, if you don't manage to install the ST, you can always install a standalone ROOT.

We recommend installing the Pro version 5.26.

Binary installation packages (faster) are available for the following operating systems:
- CERN Scientific Linux 4 and 5
- OpenSolaris 2009.06
- Mac OS X 10.4 (ppc) and 10.5 (intel 32)
- Windows

Newer Ubuntu Linux releases (version>9.04) have their own in-house packages for ROOT v5.18.

You can retrieve it and install it by:
- adding the universe repository, to do this you have to uncomment the lines that end in "universe" in /etc/apt/sources.list, e.g.: deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/ karmic universe
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu karmic universe
deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/ karmic-updates universe
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu karmic-updates universe
- installing the package root-system with e.g. sudo aptitude install root-system, or by using synaptic.

If none of the above meet your system configuration, or the installed version does not work, you'll have to compile it from source.

This is the lengthiest way of installing it, since it requires a full compilation of the code. However it is also the most versatile.

GALPROP

GALPROP is a numerical code for calculating the propagation of relativistic charged particles and the diffuse emissions produced during their propagation. The GALPROP code incorporates as much realistic astrophysical input as possible together with latest theoretical developments. The code calculates the propagation of cosmic-ray nuclei, antiprotons, electrons and positrons, and computes diffuse γ-rays and synchrotron emission in the same framework. Each run of the code is governed by a configuration file allowing the user to specify and control many details of the calculation. Thus, each run of the code corresponds to a potentially different ''model''. The code itself continues to be developed and is available to the scientific community via this website.

Fermi Science Tools

The Fermi mission is providing a suite of tools called the Fermi Science Tools for the analysis of both LAT and GBM data. This suite was developed by the FSSC and the instrument teams, and was reviewed by the Fermi Users' Group.
